The problem of the subject area of ethics is, so to speak, one with a "double bottom," for beneath the discussion of its subject matter in the narrow sense is actually concealed a diversity of positions and notions on the part of the participants regarding various prospects for the development of that discipline, the relationship among its various aspects, ways of perfecting its methodology, and so forth. This is a response to the new demands made by practical life in socialist (...) society today. It is also a result of the internal logic of the development of ethical thought and, in a certain sense, of the forecasting of science. It is precisely in this framework that V. T. Efimov's article should mainly be considered. It attracts attention, at the right time and in a polemically acute fashion, to the most urgent "growth points" of ethical knowledge, those urgently requiring joint discussion and decision. Also well chosen, in its way, is the term morality studies, even in the capacity of a preliminary denotation of the entire basic sphere of practical, concrete "validation" of ethics as a philosophical discipline. This term reflects, in our opinion, important trends in the development over the past decade of those aspects of ethics and its methodology that were previously described either as "descriptive ethics," "the sociology of morals," or "the sociology of socialization," or as "ethology," "ethnology," and so forth. As we know, all those terms suffered from imprecision or ambiguity of meaning and did not take root in Soviet philosophical literature. (shrink)

Post-Soviet Belarus: The Transformation of National Identity The paper deals with the formation of a new national identity in Belarus under conditions of post-Soviet transformation. Under the term of "national identity" the author means the identity of the population of the Republic of Belarus that will be adequate to its status of a newly independent state acquired after 1991. Special attention is paid to the existing major research approaches to the problem of constructing this national identity. According to the author's (...) view, both major approaches are inadequate; the author puts forward a new approach that goes beyond discussions on language and national culture, and corresponds to the concept of plurality of identities. The author describes some paradoxes of national identity based on the opposition of "nation" and "people". These correspond to the Western model of the "creation of modern nations", which is not fully applicable to post-Soviet Belarus. All attempts to apply this model to contemporary Belarus lead scholars to several "cultural paradoxes" that can, however, be explained within a new approach. (shrink)

Not everyone agreed with Barker when he wrote those words. Few students of the Politics would agree with him today. Disagreement comes from different sides. On one hand--the "rights" hand, one might call it--Karl Popper argued in 1945 in The Open Society and its Enemies that Aristotle's essentialism was less interesting than Platonism but equally congenial to modern totalitarianism. On the other hand--call it the "anti-rights" hand --scholars such as Alasdair MacIntyre and the legal historian Michel Villey would have it (...) that the whole modern conception of rights, especially human or natural rights, is a pernicious fabrication of the Enlightenment, with roots going back no further than the similarly pernicious nominalism of William of Ockham. As far as the current consensus is concerned, then, whether one favors rights or not, and whether one admires Aristotle or not, there are no rights--or at least no individual natural rights--in Aristotle. Polyclonal antibodies raised against the human erythrocyte nucleoside transporter were used to investigate the distribution of the nucleoside transporters in the placenta. Immunoblots of brush-border membranes isolated from the human syncytiotrophoblast revealed a cross-reactive species that co-migrated with the erythrocyte nucleoside transporter as a broad band of apparent M(r) 55,000. In contrast, no labelling was detected in basal membranes containing a similar number of equilibrative nucleoside transporters as assessed by nitrobenzylthioinosine (NBMPR)-binding. The absence of cross-reactive epitopes in basal membranes and (...) their presence in brush-border membranes was confirmed by confocal immunofluorescence microscopy. The results suggest that at least two isoforms of the NBMPR-sensitive nucleoside transporter are present in the human placenta. The lumenal surfaces of fetal capillaries, small placental vessels and umbilical vein ware also strongly labelled by the antibody, a finding that suggests that the high fetal-placental adenosine uptake previously reported is due to endothelial transporters.
